University of the Philippines Los Baños human ecology professor, Dr. Jennifer Marie S. Amparo, told the faculty researchers of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences to start with an idea or a brand in crafting a research proposal during the Online Training-Workshop on Writing and Packaging of Fundable Research Proposals in the Social Sciences on March 4-5, 2021 via Zoom teleconferencing.
‘In crafting your research proposals, you should start with an idea or a brand or a niche. Start from context. After thorough planning and writing, you need to find a partner similar to a marriage proposal,’ said Dr. Amparo during the first session of the workshop.
‘In finding your partner or research funder either through active research or by invitation, you also need to carefully study your prospective partner because there are many internal or external funders out there, yet you might have difficulty in finding your perfect match,’ she added by emphasizing the skillset to focus and to tailor the proposal to the funder’s needs.
Dr. Amparo went on saying that beginning academics should forge partnership with established academics who have the credentials of completed research projects. ‘Whatever approach you want to follow, you need to build first your research portfolio to establish your track record,’ she said.
This event is a research capacity building for the CHaSS faculty members sponsored by the Socio-Economic Analytics in Mining (SEAM), one of the four divisions of Mineral Resources Management Research and Training Center (MinRes) of the Caraga State University.

Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Center Director, encouraged the faculty researchers of CHaSS to learn by heart the inputs from the resource speaker to support the programs of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension by increasing research productivity.

Dr. Rowena P. Varela, Vice President for RIE, likewise called on the faculty researchers to look into the social aspects of mining, emphasizing that Caraga Region is the de facto mining capital of the Philippines. ‘I need you to reflect how rich Caraga Region is in terms of natural resources. As social scientists, you need to explore why people are doing these things, to contribute to the Region’s Fisheries, Agriculture, Mining, and Eco-Tourism or FAME Road Map,’ Dr. Varela added.
On the second day of the workshop, representative in each of the four departments presented their initially crafted proposals for polishing. ‘I commend all the outputs of the workshop as some of these are already ready for submission to calls for research proposals. I just want to emphasize that we should do research not just for research alone. We need to see how it contributes to the community,’ remarked by the resource speaker.

Prof. Ruth E. Sanchez, CHaSS Dean, concluded the two-day event stressing the role of the faculty researchers as true-blue professionals who should receive and carry out tasks with delight and decisiveness. -CHaSS PIWO
