The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, in partnership with the Caraga Center for Peace and Development (CCPD), opened the implementation plan of the research engagement and initiatives of the College and the Center through an Online Training-Workshop on Writing and Publishing Social Science Research held on April 20-21, 2021 via Zoom Meetings.

Dr. Arnold R. Salvacion, an environmental science PhD of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, graced the event as the resource speaker who provided inputs as to the processes of writing scientific papers in the social sciences for submission to high impact journals.

The resource speaker opened the webinar by highlighting the pre-research aspects and by answering the question: ‘Why publish?’ ‘When we generate knowledge, we provide evidence. That’s how we do things as researchers,’ said Dr. Salvacion.

‘You can start with an idea or with curiosity. Support this idea by reading,’ the UPLB associate professor said. The speaker emphasized the process of accessing literatures from reputable and credible sources. Dr. Salvacion added that, after writing, researchers need to carefully choose journals by reading submission guidelines. ‘This is to gauge if the manuscript fits the aims and scope of the journal,’ he added.

Participants prepared and polished their working papers as outputs of the online training-workshop. The Department of Psychology and the Division of Humanities, represented by Prof. Ana Lyn Masing and Prof. Belinda Yting, respectively, presented their outputs on the second day for critiquing and polishing. Other participants submitted their outputs to the CCPD for review.

Prof. Ruth E. Sanchez, CHaSS Dean, echoed the value of endurance in the context of research. ‘We can never publish papers, unless we run with endurance,’ said the Dean. ‘I believe that something good is there, if we endure,’ concluded Prof. Sanchez.

Meanwhile, Jan Rey M. Flores, CCPD Head, emphasized during the closing remarks the key points in engaging to research activities and in maintaining research productivity. ‘The CCPD, being the research arm of the College, marks this milestone as a good start in implementing our research agenda,’ Flores said. –CHaSS PIWO
